Armed robber shot dead in Mkhuze

An armed robber was killed in a shootout with police in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Mkuze.

Durban - A 25-year old armed robber was shot dead on Thursday in a shootout with police in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Mkuze, said police.

Mkuze police spokesperson Warrant Officer Zwelisha Gumbi said staff at BFS Loans had alerted police to the robbery that was in progress shortly before midday.

Police officers who rushed to the scene, returned fire after they were shot at upon their arrival at BFS Loans.

“One of the men was wounded and later died,” Gumbi said.

The second robber then barricaded himself inside the office, with several people he had taken hostage. The hostages comprised of staff and clients working in the office.

“The man later handed himself over to police,” said Gumbi.

“We conducted a failed CPR resuscitation attempt on a 25-year-old man who was declared dead on the scene,” said Robert McKenzie, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Emergency Medical Service.
