Cape Town - A man was literally stabbed in the back when a knife-wielding burglar turned out to be his own friend.

The brave victim had been slashed several times but managed to pull the attackers balaclava from his head, revealing the face of his old housemate.

Police are now on the hunt for the suspect, identified as Patrick Abongile Bill, 29, after the attack in the house in Eden Road, Walmer Estate, on July 18.

Cops say the 55-year-old home owner had been asleep when he heard a noise coming from one of his bedrooms just after 5am.

He decided to investigate and as he walked up the stairs, he saw someone entering the house from a balcony.

Woodstock Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Hilton Malila, said that the brave man wrestled with the intruder and was stabbed several times.

Despite being injured, the man managed to pull off the burglar’s balaclava and recognised him as someone who had previously lived with him.

Malila says the shocked man called out his friend’s name, who fled.

“When the complainant called the name of the suspect, he ran downstairs and locked himself in the main bedroom, broke a window and fled on foot in an unknown direction,” adds Malila.

“The suspect managed to take the complainant’s iPhone before fleeing.”

Malila says the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The suspect is still on the run.

Malila adds: “The suspect is known to the complainant as Patrick Abongile Bill, 29 years old, and is from the Kraaifontein and Kuils River area.

“The suspect is still at large; we opened a case of house robbery.”

Meanwhile, the frightened victim did not want to speak to the Daily Voice, saying he fears for his life.

“I am frightened he will come back, so I do not feel comfortable saying anything.”
