Durban - Fresh misconduct charges have been brought against the principal of a KwaZulu-Natal school who was struck off the SA Council of Educators roll for stabbing his deputy in 2012, but is still at work pending an appeal.

The principal, Sipho Mlotshwa, has been acquitted of the attempted murder and assault charges by the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court in Newcastle. However, the council said he still had to answer to them.

Last week teachers at Siyabonga High in Newcastle brought new charges of abuse of pupils against Mlotshwa to the council. They told the Daily News they had complained to the Education Department without success.

Spokesman for the educators’ council, Themba Ndlovu, confirmed this week that Mlotshwa was appealing against the decision to strike him off its roll, and that more allegations had been brought against him.

Mlotshwa’s deputy, Thembelihle Mbhele, was stabbed in 2012 after arriving late for work. Mbhele suffered head wounds.

The two were suspended by the department for a year on full pay. They returned to work in June 2013.

Contacted for comment this week, Mbhele said: “We have closed that chapter and I don’t even want to talk about it. I have nothing more to say.”

He then hung up.

But in an interview with SABC news soon after his stabbing, Mbhele said he arrived 15 minutes late for work and Mlotshwa attacked him.

Mlotshwa could not be reached for comment and National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman, Natasha Ramkisoon-Kara’s phone went to voicemail.
