Cape Town – Police officers in the Blue Downs cluster arrested hundreds of suspects and confiscated various drugs and illegal alcohol during crime prevention operations, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

In “disruptive operations”, 197 people were arrested for drug and alcohol-related offences, spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said in a statement.

Altogether 589 800 milliliters of alcohol, mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R5 025, tik with an estimated street value of R14 700, and dagga worth about R1 715 were confiscated.

“As a result of tracing operations held this week 31 wanted suspects have been arrested,” he said.

A total of 587 suspects were arrested on charges relating to, among others, murder, attempted murder, rape, fraud, drunk driving, possession of dangerous weapons, housebreaking and theft, possession of unlicensed firearms, domestic violence, possession of stolen motor vehicles, and possession of counterfeit goods.

Twenty-three suspects were kept overnight only and released on fines, as they had committed offences such as being drunk in public or riotous behaviour, Van Wyk said.

Cluster commander Brigadier Vincent Beaton commended the SA Police Service members, metro police, law enforcement officers, traffic police, neighborhood watch structures, and police reservists for their dedication and commitment in ensuring the perpetrators of crime were brought to justice.

He further encouraged the community to keep on assisting the police in ridding their neighborhoods of criminal elements.
