Fans #blamedrake for Serena’s loss

He may be a rap star, but is Drake also a jinx?

The evidence is circumstantial at best, but social media has already pronounced him guilty after Serena Williams’ shock semi-final defeat in the US Open on Friday.

With boyfriend Drake cheering on in the stands, the normally dominant Williams succumbed to unheralded Italian Roberta Vinci, crushing her dream of securing the coveted Grand Slam – winning all four major tennis titles in a calender year.

In the aftermath of her shock defeat, the hashtags “blamedrake” and “drakecurse” started trending on Twitter.

“Wherever Drake cheers, losing follows. The curse continues. #SerenaWilliams,” read one tweet.

“Drake jinxed Serena man,” added another.

One tabloid even went so far as to blame Serena’s defeat on marathon sex sessions with Drake that sapped her energy. The US tennis star seemed in control of the match, easily winning the first set, but seemed exhausted as the game wore on.

The bad omen theory gained traction as the discussion developed, with many users pointing out other instances in which Drake’s presence proved to be a curse.

In April this year, Drake watched from the stands as his favourite college team, the Kentucky Wildcats, lost in the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Wildcats hadn’t lost a game the entire season.

Drake has also been blamed for the Seattle Hawks’ most recent Super Bowl loss and for basketball star LeBron James’s much-talked-about cramps during his last season at the Miami Heat.

This isn’t, however, the first time Drake has attended a Williams match. He was pictured in the stands during Williams’ Rogers Cup victory over Chinese opponent Zheng Jie in 2011.

After her devastating loss, a heartbroken Williams was spotted leaving the stadium, accompanied by Drake. She hadn’t even changed out of her tennis uniform.
