R1m abalone bust in Gordon’s Bay

Cape Town – Police in Cape Town arrested a 31-year old man on Tuesday after discovering abalone with an estimate of R1 million in the bakkie that he was driving.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana said members of the K-9 unit were patrolling in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, near Gordon’s Bay, when they noticed a heavily laden vehicle swerving on the roadway.

“They followed the vehicle, an Isuzu LDV, in the direction of Cape Town and pulled it from the road at Firlands, Gordon`s Bay.”

She said 6824 units of shucked (de-shelled) abalone packed in bags with an estimated street value of R1.1 million were confiscated.

The driver was arrested and was due to appear in the Strand Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
