Kulula fake account fools thousands

Johannesburg - Over twenty-five thousand Instagram users have been mislead to follow a fake kulula.com account.

A fake account was set up on Monday under the username @KululaAirways.

The account’s bio bar stated, “First 25 000 followers along with 2 of their friends gets a free flight ANYWHERE in AFRICA. Follow us, post a screenshot and tag us.”

The account has no posts and but have thousand of tags due to the instructions to get the free tickets.

Kulula quickly started trending on twitter where tweeps advised and ridiculed their friends falling for the hoax

Head of Marketing for kulula.com Shaun Pozyn said they were aware of the hoax. The account is yet to be removed.

“This is a serious abuse of our intellectual property, and we will take the appropriate action to have the account remove,” He said.

He added that if customers come across any other social media platforms claiming to be part of kulula.com, they are urged to contact them.

A similar hoax hit Mango Airlines with the same instructions as the Kulula.com fake account but it was taken down swiftly by Instagram.

With that many followers, it is another day and another win for internet trollers.
