Cape Town - Youth platform The Young Independents (TYI) was launched last week and is now looking for entrants for its “100 inspiring and aspiring leaders” project.

The platform, launched by the Independent Media Group, will capture exciting youth driven initiatives locally and across the continent.

Group executive Mike Ntsasa said it is a platform to connect and give a voice to millions of youths across the continent with the aim to build one, united Africa.

“At the heart of this is ‘100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders’. This annual list will showcase 100 South Africans changing and challenging the game.

“They are young people on top of their field or poised to become just that, all under 35.”

He said young people did not often fit into traditional categories or ways of working as many of them are lateral thinkers who use technology to develop brands around their skills and talents.

There are five categories to nominate from: Distributors; Healers; Influencers; Innovators and Trailblazers.

Entrants have to be South African citizens.

Ntsasa said the list will be a balance between inspiration and information.

It will use creative editorial elements to offer a mixture of aspiration and insight into youth markets and the challenges they face. Candidates will also offer mentorship and advice to young people who aspire to follow their lead.

He said ideas for practical achievement will be formulated and shared on the Young Independents website.

An annual summit will rotate across provinces and parts of the African continent.

“As a build-up to the annual summit, we will host youth dialogues across the provinces to help the youth connect and build a common vision, while seeking to address the many challenges they face,” added Ntsasa.

The executive chairman of Independent Media, Dr Iqbal Survé, said: “Through the Young Independents, we will ensure youth across the continent are fully recognised and given a voice to articulate their own narrative as the continent’s powerful agents of political, social and economic transformation.”
