Cape Town - A policeman on duty in Cape Town was shot and wounded and two police officers were stabbed and had official equipment stolen in separate incidents on Thursday night.

This follows a string of other attacks on police in the city this year.

Police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said five unidentified suspects robbed and attacked two police members at a lodge in Hout Bay at about 8.45pm.

“The suspects took police personal belongings including SAPS IDs, phones and laptops, and fled the scene on foot.”

One of the wounded policemen was a warrant officer from Port Elizabeth and was visiting the city.

“He was stabbed in his neck and chest and taken to… hospital with serious injuries.”

The second policeman, a captain from Burgersdorp, was stabbed in his head.

In a separate attack at about 11pm, Rwexana said, a 31-year-old policeman attached to the Western Cape Flying Squad was shot while chasing a hijacked vehicle in Philippi. “The policeman is in a stable condition in hospital.”

Rwexana said cases of attempted murder had been opened in connection with both attacks and no arrests had been made.

MEC for Community Safety Dan Plato said he was aware of the latest attacks on police in the city.

“We condemn any attack against any police official.

Police are here to provide a safe environment for us.”

Plato urged all community stakeholders to speak out against attacks on police.

He said perpetrators should face the full might of the law, and called on anyone with information about the incidents to come forward so the criminals can be arrested.

On Tuesday, police in Masiphumelele came under attack from an angry crowd and their vehicle was stoned and burnt.
