Pagad calls for more anti-Israel action

Pagad says it is not enough to protest against Woolworths, and called for pro-Palestinian support to be stepped up.

Cape Town – The leader of People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad), Abdus Salaam Ebrahim on Monday said it was not sufficient simply protesting against Woolworths – and that more needed to be done.

“Simply showing up at a protest is not enough,” said Ebrahim.

“People must put their money where their mouth is.”

Ebrahim was speaking at the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS movement) led protest against American artist Pharrell Williams’ concert in Cape Town on Monday.

He urged South Africans to abstain from supporting those allegedly maintaining relations with Israel.

Ebrahim also commented on the presence of the African National Congress (ANC) at the protest.

“It’s very hypocritical of the ANC and Cosatu (Congress of South African Trade Unions) to be voicing their opinions,” he said.

Ebrahim said that the ANC government had been guilty of supplying arms to Israel, and continuing to do business with the country.

He however conceded that the ANC were, in some ways, looking to increase pressure on Israel. But it was not yet enough.

“I think the ANC needs to catch a wake up call and they need to do things wholeheartedly,” said Ebrahim.
