Cape Town - A man, 38, appeared in court on Monday, for his alleged involvement in the gang rape and brutal murder of a teenage girl, Valencia Farmer, on the Cape Flats 16 years ago.

Because he faces a rape charge, he may not be named until his trial commences in the Western Cape High Court.

He was arrested on September 11, and made his second appearance on Monday, in the Blue Downs District Court, before magistrate Gerald Hattingh.

The magistrate ordered that he remain in custody, and postponed the case to October 16.

The Western Cape Directorate for Public Prosecutions has allocated the matter to senior State advocate, Louis van Niekerk, who prosecuted and secured convictions against the three others involved in the rape and slaying.

The man has not yet indicated any intention to apply for bail but, at Monday’s proceedings, the prosecutor said the State would oppose bail.

The prosecutor said the charges would be framed under Schedule 6 of the Criminal procedure Act.

This means that, if he applies for bail he will have to satisfy the court that there are substantial and compelling circumstances justifying his release on bail.

In the early hours of Sunday, June 27, 1999, Valencia Farmer was gang-raped and stabbed at least 50 times before her throat was slit in a derelict house in Eerste River.
