Cape Town - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has honoured Eskom for its openness and responsiveness by awarding the power utility the 2015 Golden Key award for the “Most Responsive Public Body”, Eskom said.

Eskom won the SAHRC’s award on Monday.

The winner was decided by votes from the media, political parties and Chapter 9 institutions.

“Eskom has previously won Golden Key awards in 2008, 2009 and 2013,” newly appointed Eskom CEO Brian Molefe said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Winning it again this year is a clear demonstration that the company has not wavered from its commitment to transparency, openness and responsiveness.”

Golden Key awards are awarded to organisations committed to best practices in ensuring and complying with the provisions of the Promotion of Access to Information (PAIA) Act 2 of 2000.

“As a model corporate citizen, Eskom is fully behind the spirit and letter of the Promotion of Access to Information Act. Our policy is, as a minimum, to comply with all legislation and we thus ensure that legislative requirements are incorporated into Eskom policies, procedures and standards at all times,” Molefe said.

The SAHRC holds the Golden Key awards every year. The contest is aimed at recognising key players and stakeholders within South African society, including government departments, deputy information officers and private institutions, for best practice in this area.
