Durban - Eight months after the crash that claimed the lives of eight KwaZulu-Natal pupils, the driver of the bakkie has been charged.

The Daily News can confirm that after intensive investigations and consultations between police and the director of public prosecutions, 33-year-old Lungi Mthimkhulu, has been charged with eight counts of culpable homicide or alternatively, negligent driving.

Mthimkhulu, who suffered serious injuries in the crash, has turned down interviews.

Meanwhile, the parents of the eight Fezokuhle Primary School pupils who were killed, said they were satisfied that “finally something is happening”.

Philisile Njoko, the mother of two children critically injured, said she just wanted to find out what happened.

“We trusted this woman with our children’s lives, and she has not approached us to tell us what happened,” Njoko said.

Simphiwe Chonco, whose daughter, Sinethemba, was killed, said his family would find closure only once they heard Mthimkhulu’s side of the story.

At least 15 other children suffered serious injuries after the overloaded bakkie, which was taking them home from school, crashed into a house.
