Cape Town - A Table View police officer is expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly helping a suspect to escape during an arrest.

The 43-year-old officer was arrested by Kraaifontein police on Friday after she allegedly obstructed her colleagues to perform their “official duties during an operation” at the weekend.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the officer has been charged with defeating the ends of justice.

“It is alleged that on Saturday at about 7.30pm police were busy with an arrest in Carmen Street, Scottsdene, in connection with the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“While they were busy, a female police captain from Table View arrived in a private vehicle, accompanied by an unknown male in civilian clothes. She was dressed in full police uniform.”

Van Wyk said it is alleged that the officer interfered in the arrest of the suspect and demanded that the police officers release him.

“When they refused, she pulled the suspect free and instructed the suspect to run away.

“The police managed to recover the firearm from the suspect, which was later found to have been stolen in Manenberg,” Van Wyk said.
