Armenia to host international potato seminar next August
YEREVAN, October 6. / ARKA /. Hrachya Berberyan, head of an Armenian farmers union, said today that Yerevan will host an international potato seminar in 2016 August.
He said Armenia's natural and climatic conditions are very favorable for potato growing. According to him, the decision to organize the seminar was taken during a recent meeting of Armenian and Georgian farmers, specializing in potato growing. It was the first such meeting where the sides looked into the prospects for export of Armenian potato seeds to Georgia.
According to Berberyan, the meeting was attended also by representatives of international organizations, as well as their partners from the Netherlands.
"The most important decision that was made at the meeting was the decision to organize an international seminar of potato growers in Armenia next August. We have sent invitations to our colleagues in Iran, Iraq and Eurasian Economic Union member countries. We have plans to start exports of high-quality potato seeds to Russia, Tajikistan, Georgia, Iraq, Iran and other countries," Berberyan said.
'We are planning to establish experimental fields and intend to invite everyone to come and see the results. It will be an event that will raise potato growing in Armenia to a new level," Berberyan said, adding that in terms of potato seed production Armenia is far ahead of Belarus.' He said every effort should be done to create an international potato center in Armenia.
Speaking about this year's potato crop, he said because of the protracted drought, which lasted for 35 days, about 10-15% of the crop was lost. He warned also that due to the rainy weather, in about 10 days potato prices will rise by 10-15%. -0-
