Armenian IT sector makes significant progress, Moroyan

YEREVAN, October 12. / ARKA /. Armenian IT sector has made significant progress in recent years, shifting from outsourcing to development and marketing of their own products, Tony Moroyan, president and CEO of Viasphere International and co-founder and president of ArmTech Congress, said today at the opening of the eighth annual ArmTech Congress  in the Armenian capital city Yerevan.

He said Armenia’s IT sector has a steady position  in the global IT field, and it is now time to actively promote start-up companies, which are very important for the development of small countries like  Armenia.

He said  annual congresses of ArmTech have been instrumental in significantly improving the recognition of Armenia as a technological country, which may  help it establish cooperation with the titans of Silicon Valley.

According to him, this co-operation and recognition of the country will attract additional investment into the sector that acquires strategic importance.

The eighth annual ArmTech congress is being held this year in Yerevan and Nagorno-Karabakh on October 12-14. The annual event attracts famous industry professionals, high-level executives and interested parties from many countries.

This year a venture conference will be conducted along with ArmTech, where 25 companies will present their ideas and programs. Five of them will receive grants in the amount of $15,000 each for further development.

Another feature of the event is a contest of business ideas "Clean technologies: Armenia' involving 24 companies, of which the four best will receive a prize of $10,000, while the winner will be able to present its program in Silicon Valley.

ArmTech Congress is held under the high patronage of the Armenian Prime Minister, with the assistance of the governments of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, the World Bank and with the support of Enterprise Incubator Foundation.

Sponsors of the event are PicsArt, National Instruments, Cronimet Charitable Foundation, the American Foundation for Armenia. The partners of the Congress are Microsoft, Viasphere Technopark, Synopsys Armenia, UNIDO, CRDF, Philip Morris Armenia, Feinberg and Green Travel.

ArmTech is held alternately in the USA and Armenia. The first congress was held July 4-7, 2007 in San Francisco, USA.-0-.
