Cape Town - The Shoprite Group would be donating almost R100 million worth of food in support of World Food Day, the group said on Thursday.

World Food Day is on Friday, October 16, and the Shoprite Group said it would be doing its bit to support the fight against global hunger by donating up to R100 million worth of food to Foodbank SA.

Spokesperson Jennifer van der Westhuizen said that this surplus food donation was over and above the group’s donation of R92,4 million worth of food to the organisation in the past year through various partnerships, including Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa, that was focused on fighting hunger.

In making this donation, she said the group would be helping over 11 million South Africans who dealt with hunger on a daily basis.

The donation comes from store operations and was filtered down to local charities and community groups.

“On World Food Day, the Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchens would be serving close to 15 000 meals in impoverished communities across the country,” she added.

She added that in addition to soup kitchens, Shoprite “has also committed to establish and grow sustainable community food kitchens across the country”.

Pilot programmes for this initiative included a community food garden established in Bishop Lavis in Cape Town which would “yield some four tons of fresh produce annually and enough vegetables to feed 1 000 learners daily”.
