Immediate sense of relief as Newcastle open McClaren account in style

Steve McClaren admitted to feeling relief as his Newcastle United side landed their first win of the Premier League season on Sunday.

The Magpies fired themselves off the bottom of the table with a 6-2 demolition job on Norwich City at St James' Park to give McClaren his first win in charge of the north east outfit.

Four goals from Gini Wijnaldum plus scoring efforts from Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic opened up Newcastle's account in what was a day of enormous relief for the manager.

"It's relief, and then thinking we have got to prepare and we have got to do it again next week," McClaren said.

"It's very short, the feeling is very short. Football is all about momentum and you can have momentum going the other way - which we have had. We want this one to go forward.

"There's a long way to go, a lot of work to do, but today showed the potential and showed the supporters at home that this is what we are capable doing."

The win added to Newcastle's three early-season draws from nine matches which has them sitting 18th on the table, ahead of Aston Villa and Tyne-Wear rivals Sunderland.
