Durban - A policewoman being treated for depression after killing the father of her child last year will be sentenced in the Pietermaritzburg High Court in December.

Thembelihle Ngcobo, 32, made a brief appearance in court on Monday, where sentencing was postponed to December 11 to allow her to consult a psychologist.

Ngcobo was sent for mental assessment to ascertain whether she was capable of understanding sentencing proceedings, and was declared fit to appear in court.

In December last year, Ngcobo pleaded guilty to gunning down 29-year-old Constable Bongani Lembethe outside his home in Signal Hill, Prestbury, on March 3 last year.

She has since given birth to Lembethe’s son, who is a year old.

Ngcobo said she shot Lembethe during an argument.

He was shot several times in the face, chest, stomach and legs.

Ngcobo fled in her car after the shooting, but the day after the incident, she handed herself over to Vryheid police and confessed to shooting Lembethe.

Ngcobo is on R2 000 bail pending her sentence.
