Wits students appeal for support
Wits’s incoming SRC president Nompendulo Mkatshwa appealed to parents and communities to support #feesmustfall.
|||Johannesburg - Witwatersrand University’s incoming Student Representative Council (SRC) president Nompendulo Mkatshwa on Wednesday, appealed to parents and communities to support the campaign against fee hikes.
“We appreciate the parents who have lent their support, but we also appeal to others to please give students who live at home pocket money to come to campus, we need everyone’s support… and to the Johannesburg society please support our course,” said a tired Mkatshwa.
The students, who had been protesting for the past seven days, spent the night inside Senate House, which they had renamed Solomon House.
She told the students that Wits set the tone for the campaign and will keep on fighting.
“We are met with difficulties as we forge ahead, but its important that we don’t let our guard down. Even if they take chairs away in here, we shall sit on the floor and study.”
She added that the protest had taken a toll on students.
“Its tough yes, but we are not going to [be] demoralised by the numbers today, we know where we come from, and we know where we are going.”
The protesters asked reporters to leave the meeting so they could caucus about the programme for the day.
They then held political discussions for an hour and then took buses to the medical campus where they regrouped and sang revolutionary songs.
