Durban - An East Coast Radio DJ was sent packing this week for allegedly being drunk and disorderly on his Sunday morning show last weekend.

Rock Mbambo is also alleged to have used vulgar language and behaved in an unruly fashion on air during his 2am-6am time slot. According to listeners, he often stopped songs and left the mic on while the songs were playing.

Mbambo started as an intern in the sales department on East Coast Radio (ECR) in 2013, and later realised his dream of being on air. He requested to present a show last year and has been on radio ever since.

After the show, social media went into a frenzy. While some thought it was a joke, others thought he deserved a fine.

ECR posted a status on its Facebook page on Sunday to inform listeners that they were investigating the matter.

Abigail Stuurman Moodley posted: “How can he disrespect the audience like that… he should get a fine.”

Lerato Mkhwanazi, on the other hand, was sympathetic. “We all have our bad days and no harm was done. It was 2am on a Sunday morning.

“Most of SA was in the same state or passed out by then. Let him sign his warning and let’s move on. Still a loyal fan and this little incident shouldn’t overshadow his talent. At least he still knew his name and the sms number.”

ECR’s programming manager, Zane Derbyshire, confirmed Mbambo’s termination on Saturday. “Rock Mbambo was drunk n air in the early hours of Sunday morning. Internal processes were followed this week and his contract was terminated,” she said.

On his biography on the radio station’s website, Mbambo described himself as “a pastor’s kid who lives a rock star life”.

His show is billed as containing “stand-up comedy clips, jokes and hilarious real life experiences is what Rock shares in the early hours of the weekend. He’s a people’s person and loves making new friends, be it at a club, a shopping centre or at social gatherings…”

Attempts to contact Mbambo were unsuccessful.
