Durban - When Pinetown music producer Kyran Garton released a song about President Jacob Zuma, little did he realise it would become an overnight sensation.

The song, Zumanomics, was inspired by the president’s more humorous statements and his “inability to count big numbers”.

It starts with an infusion of electro and house music and goes into some of Zuma’s more controversial statements this year.

“Harmless fun,” Garton told the Sunday Tribune on Friday. “I enjoy creating music that is different and pushes the boundaries of creativity. Our president has been a talking point over the years and after seeing videos that featured him, I knew that he was someone that I wanted to create a track of.

“The song is light-hearted and something that one can dance and socialise to. It was not meant to be serious. Everything happened so quickly. One minute I was watching a video of him, and the next I was adding his voice to the mix.”

Garton says the song took more than seven hours to create.

Once he posted it on Facebook last weekend, the hits rose to more than 100 000, and sit at almost 400 000. Visit the link to the song on his Facebook page at https://goo.gl/1ZuBQo.

He has also received about 10 000 views on his YouTube channel and SoundCloud.

The 21-year-old, who attends Varsity College, said the response on social media was overwhelming. The third year B-Com student hopes the president will hear his song. “I would not be surprised if he has already listened to it, and if he has, I’d love to hear his views on it. That would be cool,” he said.

The gym fanatic and writer is mixing a track with vocals from Forest Gump to be released soon.

He also divulged that he is collaborating with American rapper, Wann Wyte, on a song based on the effects of racism.

Zumanomics has aired on East Coast Radio and Jacaranda FM.
