A year without answers for Meyiwa family

The family of murdered Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa are losing faith that his killer will be brought to book.

Johannesburg - Monday will mark exactly a year since Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa was killed and still no arrest has been made.

Senzo’s dad, Sam Meyiwa, told our sister newspaper The Saturday Star that his family is slowly losing confidence in the police.

“How is it possible that no one has been arrested after a whole year?” said an angry Meyiwa.

“The people who were in the house with my son at the time he was killed should have answers as to what happened, yet no one is saying a thing. I have a feeling (people) have been paid off to keep quiet.”

Meyiwa describes as “fishy” the resignation of a key police investigator from the team probing his son’s murder.

“No one even told me about this.” The family have been battling since losing their “breadwinner”.

“Every morning when I wake up with my wife we think things will be better, but nothing changes. The pain is as fresh as the day we found out (Senzo) had passed on.”

“It’s difficult to take the loss because (Senzo) was everything to us. My wife is trying to cope, but I can see she battles each day.”

Meyiwa confirms that his family are planning a traditional ritual to mark the first anniversary of his son’s death, but they cannot afford to perform ukubuyisa (bring back the spirit), a ceremony at which they needed to slaughter a cow and a goat.

“If I don’t do this ritual, my son is not going to rest in peace,” said Meyiwa.

“Life is getting tougher every day. Sometimes we even go to bed with empty stomachs.

“Our lives have changed for the worse since Senzo died.”

Police are still appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information, although they previously said their investigators had “overwhelming evidence”.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator(s) can contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line at 32211.

There is a R250 000 reward.
