Durban – A group of about 20 heavily armed ATM bombers who shot and wounded a police officer in KwaDukuza (Stanger) in KwaZulu-Natal did not get a single cent for their efforts, police said on Wednesday.

The group disarmed and hijacked security guards, planted and set off their bombs, but failed to get their cash when police arrived at the Standard Bank branch opposite the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s court.

“The quick reaction by the police prevented the suspects from taking the money,” said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane. Earlier Zwane had said he could not immediately confirm how much cash had been taken.

Zwane said the police officer, who had been shot in the abdomen, had been taken to hospital in a serious, but stable condition.

There were also reports that three security guards had been taken to hospital, but Zwane could not immediately say if the reports were accurate.

Police were investigating a case of armed robbery, malicious damage to property, attempted murder and hijacking.

KwaDukuza, formerly known as Stanger, is about 70 kilometres north-east of Durban.
