Belarus' external state debt down by $2.9bn in 2023
In 2023 Belarus' gross external state debt went down by $2.9 billion to total $36.9 billion as of 1 January 2024, BelTA learned from the Belarusian National Bank. In relation to GDP, the external debt decreased from 53.7% as of 1 January 2023 to 51.4% as of 1 January 2024. External debt per capita went down from $4,300 to under $4,000. Net external debt position, which equals gross external debt less external assets in the form of debt instruments, decreased from 18% to 13.5% of GDP in 2023. The bulk of Belarus' external debt is still represented by long-term borrowings, at 72.3% as of 1 January.
