'Most cases of hepatitis are asymptomatic. In many cases, people infected with hepatitis B and C are completely unaware of it. Therefore, regular examinations and preventive measures are very important. I would like to say that Armenian medical organisations conduct free examinations to detect this disease,’ she said.

Abovyan stressed that the Ministry of Health is taking all necessary steps to make the treatment and medicines available to patients. This programme started in the second half of 2020. About 500 patients were included in the initial period. At the end of December 2023, some 2,569 patients with hepatitis C had received treatment under the programme. In 2024, more than 400 patients were enrolled in the programme.

The National Centre for Infectious Diseases has initiated a number of public events as part of World Hepatitis Day. In particular, mobile centres offering free and anonymous testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis will start working in Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Artashat, Abovyan and Gavar from 28 to 30 July.
