Thousands arrested in W Cape

A total of 1 171 wanted crime suspects have been arrested in the Western Cape since December 16, police said.

Cape Town - A total of 1 171 wanted crime suspects have been arrested in the Western Cape over the past two weeks, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the suspects were wanted for crimes including rape, attempted murder and murder.

“Of the number, 45 suspects had previously appeared before court and absconded, the rest were arrested on newly reported cases”, he said.

The operations started on December 16 and will continue into the New Year.

Van Wyk said Operation Fiela initiatives had also netted hundreds of additional suspects.

Just over a thousand suspects were arrested through those operations and 34 kilograms of dagga and eight firearms were also confiscated.

“The integrated operations also saw an assortment of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, tik, khat and mandrax seized from various locations. Police also confiscated 2 748 litres of alcohol. All these efforts are aimed at curbing crime during the holiday season”, he said.
