Johannesburg – The University of Johannesburg on Wednesday said it was investigating a former student who had registered students unlawfully.

In a statement, UJ spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen said the alleged scam involved a past member of the Student Representative Council and other unidentified individuals.

“UJ takes these allegations of criminal conduct very seriously. In addition to looking into the matter internally, the University has also approached the police to investigate the claims so that all those who are associated with the alleged scam – whether inside or outside the University – can be brought to book,” said Esterhuizen.

The institution has not yet named the person in question.

Esterhuizen said the university had appointed Amanda Strydom to investigate the matter.

“The investigation follows after media reports on radio and print alleged that certain individuals had scammed aspirant students by asking them to pay money in order to register,” said Esterhuizen.

The university had announced in February that it had registered 43,000 students for the academic year.
