|||King William’s Town – A 33-year-old man was arrested in Centane in the Eastern Cape for allegedly murdering another man after a shebeen quarrel, police said on Friday.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at the Xhobani Location in Qina Village, Centane.
The men were at a shebeen when a fight broke out between them, ending in the suspect allegedly stabbing the 31-year-old victim to death.
Manatha said Centane police were contacted and dispatched to the scene where they found the suspect and arrested him after a preliminary investigation.
The suspect has been charged with murder and will appear before the Centane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased was being withheld as police were still trying to contact his close relatives.
Manatha said that in addition to the suspect appearing in court, the shebeen would be dealt with accordingly.
“Traditional leaders in their areas and community leaders are urged to assist the police closing down all the shebeens,” he said.
“Taverns must adhere to opening and closing times to avoid crime.”
