Cape Town - The Western Cape government on Friday warned the province's drought-affected farmers against falling for a scam where government funding is promised in exchange for a fee.

This, after the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) on Tuesday issued an alert about the scam.

“We have received reports from DAFF that a man is asking farmers to pay R20 000 to receive R270 000 drought relief from DAFF,” said Western Cape MEC of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde.

“Government does not, under any circumstances, require farmers to pay for drought relief funding.”

Although there have been no reported cases of the scam in the Western Cape, those who wanted to report an incident could call the Director at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture Andre Roux on 021 808 5010 or Carl Opperman at Agri Wes Kaap on 021 860 3804.
