ARF is opposed to deployment of international peacekeepers in Karabakh conflict zone
A senior member of the governing Republican Party of Armenia Vahram Baghdasaryan said today that ‘there is a proposal to deploy peacekeeping troops in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone in case of need.’
Speaking to reporters, he declined to elaborate about the nationality of the peacekeepers and whether the deployment would benefit the interests of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. In response to a question whether the Karabakh authorities would agree to their deployment, Baghdasaryan said "no decision is taken without consultation with them."
The possible deployment of a peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh is opposed by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation/ Dashnaktsutyun (ARF).
‘There is no need for it as the situation is controlled by the Armenian side,’ a senior member of the party Armen Rustamyan said
"The deployment of peacekeeping troops is in the interests of other countries as it would enable establishment of direct control over the territory,’ he said. He reminded that Armenia has always advocated international control of the situation in the conflict zone, namely the placement of equipment to determine violators of the ceasefire along the line of contact.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle president Serzh Sargsayn said Armenia has never been against the deployment of peacekeepers, ‘however, we think that the conflict should find a complete and final solution.’
‘Quite the contrary, we expressed our readiness to sign a corresponding document that would call for a comprehensive settlement of the conflict, including the presence of peacekeeping forces between the two parties. However, Azerbaijanis did not want it.” -0-
