Hundreds make their way to stadium for #ANCRally
Hundreds of ANC supporters are heading for Ellis Park for the ANC's "Siyanqoba" rally ahead of Wednesday's municipal elections.
|||Johannesburg - Hundreds of African National Congress supporters started making their way to Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday for the ANC's “victory” rally ahead of the August 3 municipal elections.
The Siyanqoba Rally in Joburg will also be beamed to five other venues across the country in last show of strength ahead of Wednesday’s poll.
Young and old, clad in ANC colours, braved the chilly morning weather and sang revolutionary songs.
Supporters who live in surrounding suburbs, such as Hillbrow, Troyville, and the CBD, made their way to the stadium on foot.
Those who arrived in buses waved ANC T-shirts, carrying food parcels handed to them before they boarded the buses.
The ANC's popular revolutionary song “Asinavalo”, meaning “we have no fear”, blared from loudspeakers at the venue.
President Jacob Zuma will be the main speaker at the rally, ahead of what has been called the country's most highly contested elections since 1994.
The ANC is facing fierce competition from opposition parties, such as the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters, for a share in the country's municipalities this year.
The two largest opposition parties have been making inroads and gaining support in the highly contested metropolitan municipalities of Johannesburg, Tshwane (Pretoria), and Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth).
