Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) said today it has detained and arrested a total of 47 people as part of a criminal case involving the seizure of a police station in Yerevan on July 17 by a group of armed men.

YEREVAN, August 1. /ARKA/. Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) said today it has detained and arrested a total of 47 people as part of a criminal case involving the seizure of a police station in Yerevan on July 17 by a group of armed men.

They are charged with the seizure of buildings, vehicles and communication means and illegal purchase, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of firearms (articles 219 and 235 of Armenia’s Criminal Code).

The armed group that sized a police station in Yerevan on July 17 laid down their arms late on Sunday, July 31. Armenia’s National Security Service said in a statement that ‘twenty terrorists have been arrested."

"With their consistent and coordinated actions, special units of Armenian law-enforcement bodies have forced members of the armed group to surrender to the authorities," it said.

The group had 31 members when it seized the police station on July 17, demanding the release of Zhirayr Sefilian, the leader of a small opposition party called Founding Parliament, arrested earlier for illegal possession of arms. -0-
