Vasco take on name, spirit of Stellenbosch

Cape Town - Having recently relocated the club to Stellenbosch, Vasco da Gama have now also been re-named Stellenbosch FC.

The National First Division (NFD) club is now based at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport and it is hoping the concomitant access to the science and technology available will act as the catalyst for promotion to the top-flight PSL.

“Our club is now based in Stellenbosch and we are fully entrenched in the Stellenbosch and Cape Winelands community,” the club’s chief operations officer Edries Burton said in a statement.

The community and the people have been extremely supportive towards us and our move to Stellenbosch. The name Stellenbosch FC shows our intention of creating a club that symbolises the Cape Winelands community. We are on a pathway of building something special, and we want to take this community with us.”

The club also want to tap into the wealth of hidden football talent in the region, with two Stellenbosch-born players already in the squad - former Ajax Cape Town striker Alcardo van Graan and the emerging Luke le Roux, who is currently an SA U17 squad member.
