Armenian ombudsman dismisses information that wounded insurgents have been tortured

Armen Tatoyan, Armenian ombudsman, denied information that Armen Lambaryan and Sedrak Nazaryan, wounded members of Sasna Dzrer Group that seized the police patrol regiment compound in Yerevan on July 17, have been tortured.

YEREVAN, August 5. /ARKA/. Armen Tatoyan, Armenian ombudsman, denied information that Armen Lambaryan and Sedrak Nazaryan, wounded members of Sasna Dzrer Group that seized the police patrol regiment compound in Yerevan on July 17, have been tortured.

Tatoyan, responding to the alarming information that the two wounded insurgents have been tortured and Lambaryan’s lawyer has been denied access to her client, instructed his officers to visit Erebuni Medical Center.

After visiting the medical center, the officers said the information about brutal treatment of the mentioned men has not been confirmed.

Responding to the lawyer’s access denial complaint, the office will send a written report to the preliminary inquiry agency on Friday.

Lambaryan was wounded and taken to hospital on July 29 and Nazaryan was brought to the hospital on July 31 with a wound in his chest.

Sasna Tsrer seized the police regiment compound on July 17 demanding resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, Armenian president, and freedom for their leader Zhirayr Sefilian, who was jailed earlier on charge of illegal possession of weapons.

On July 31, the insurgents laid down weapons and surrendered to the authorities to avoid bloodshed.

One police colonel has been killed in the attack and another law enforcement officer has been killed in obscure circumstances. There are wounded people on both sides.

Thousands of citizens, joining Sasna Dzrer’s demands, took to the streets to support the group. Dozens of them, including journalists, were maimed by the police and taken to hospital with various injuries. ---0----
