Protests erupt at UKZN

Two students were arrested and lectures disrupted at two of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's campuses.

Durban - Two students were arrested and lectures disrupted at two of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's campuses on Wednesday. University spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said that lectures were disrupted for the third day at the university's Pietermaritzburg campus while lectures were disrupted at the university's Westville campus from about midday on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, he said that a meeting was scheduled to take place between the university management and student representatives. It was not immediately known what the outcome of that meeting was.

“The university condemns in the strongest possible terms any violence and intimidation and action will be taken against students that are found to be in violation of university rules and regulations,” he said.

Comment was not immediately available from police, but it is understood that police had to fire rubber bullets at students on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

A mass meeting was held at the university's Westville campus, but while there was much singing and dancing there were no immediate reports of damage or police action. Students are demanding that there should be no fee increase and issues over accommodation need to be addressed.

On Monday morning a group of students staged a protest on Yusuf Dadoo Street over their living conditions.
