Pakistan, India Will Consider New Talks on Water Dispute

After the World Bank halted a process to arbitrate a longstanding dispute over two Indian hydroelectric projects, Pakistani and Indian officials said Wednesday they would consider resuming direct talks over water sharing, The Associated Press reported Wednesday. With a population of 180 million people, Pakistan is a largely agriculture-based economy and the country fears the proposed projects could severely deplete its water resources. A deeper concern, the report said, is the dispute could one day develop into a major war between the nuclear-armed rivals.
