Armenian government agencies to cut electricity bills by 18 percent

YEREVAN, February 2. /ARKA/. The Armenian government on Thursday approved the second stage of an electricity saving plan of action designed for 2017-2018. According to energy infrastructure and natural resources minister Ashot Manukyan, the government agencies are supposed to reduce energy costs by 17.9% this year.

Speaking at a government session Manukyan said in the first stage of the program electricity bills of government agencies fell by 8.6%. He said this figure is planned to be raised to almost 18% in 2017.

He said the first stage of the program involved public institutions, medical facilities, education and penitentiary institutions. According to him, the private sector has also intensified energy saving efforts.

According to him, energy efficiency is regarded in the program as a matter of national energy security, as well as a matter of improved economic competitiveness and reduced negative impact on the environment.

Major electricity generators in Armenia are the nuclear power plant, which accounts for about 30% of the total electricity generated in the country, thermal power plants account for 41.9% and hydro power plants for 29.2%.  Renewable sources account for 11% of the total energy production. -0-
