Volgograd residents call for criminal charges against mayor over deaths at pumping station
In their appeal to Alexander Bastrykin, the residents described the tragedy that occurred at the sewage pumping station on July 6, resulting in two fatalities, and the 2022 incident that left over 200,000 people without water and heating. They also recalled the heating shutdown in the winter of 2024, which affected almost 500 households. The residents blame Mayor Vladimir Marchenko for these situations.
"Residential buildings are damaged, and hundreds of thousands of Volgograd residents are left without water in fourty-degree heat. The incident led to deaths and injuries, which are serious consequences of malfeasance. Vladimir Marchenko should bear full responsibility for these horrible events and the loss of life," wrote activist Sergey Ostrovsky.
The explosion at the sewage pumping station occurred on July 6 and resulted in at least two fatalities, with several individuals still considered missing. The Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case for the violation of safety regulations during work.
In October 2022, Volgograd experienced an incident at a sewage collector. Wastewater contaminated the Volga River, and over 200,000 residents were left without water and heating for an entire week. Residents believe this was a consequence of Vladimir Marchenko transferring public utilities into concession.
