Pensioner assigned compulsory treatment for spilling brilliant green over ballots in Voronezh Oblast

The court in Borisoglebsk found 67-year-old Yulia Karatayeva guilty of obstructing the exercise of voting rights or the work of election commissions (Article 141 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). She was fined 30,000 rubles, assigned compulsory treatment, and placed under psychiatric supervision.

In March 2024, during the presidential elections, Yulia Karatayeva poured brilliant green dye into a ballot box at a polling station. She admitted her guilt and claimed that fraudsters had forced her to spoil the ballots.

According to Karatayeva, unknown individuals stole 600,000 rubles from her and later asked her to "reveal a fraudster at a polling station" by spilling brilliant green over the ballots. In return, she was promised a certificate of appreciation.

Borisoglebsk saw three cases of ballots being poured over with brilliant green. Another retired woman, Svetlana Borovkova, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service in late June. A 19-year-old girl was also detained for spoiling ballots, but her verdict has not yet been announced.
