Assistant to State Duma deputy speaker withdrawn from election in Tuva due to conflict with United Russia over military personnel

Ayas Saryglar, an assistant to Shalban Kara-ool, a deputy speaker of the State Duma and former head of Tuva, was denied registration for the election to the republic’s Great Khural (parliament). Saryglar was a nominee from the Just Russia party. The registration refusal was motivated by the politician’s attempt to hide his criminal record, though the specific charge was not disclosed.

A conflict between the authorities in Tuva escalated because of a statement Shalban Kara-ool made during the United Russia primaries in May 2024. The State Duma deputy speaker declared that war veterans from Tuva were forced to withdraw from the primaries under threats. In response, United Russia accused the politician of spreading false information.

According to Vladimir Yakushev, the acting secretary of United Russia’s General Assembly, the party nominated at least 375 military members for the elections at various levels, scheduled for September 2024.
