Aston Villa players power rankings: November’s winners and losers
Aston Villa fans have given their player ratings throughout November and our power rankings have identified a shock Player of the Month.
Villa continued their exceptional form with wins in the Europa League the Premier League. They’ve essentially been good enough or even better in every game but one, and your Villa player ratings reflected a stellar month on the pitch.
The top grades are down because of mathematics (you can see what I mean in the October power rankings) but our AVF Power Rankings are beginning to take shape as the season progresses.
The process is simple: each month, we’ll be taking an average of your post-match player ratings (scored out of 10) for the matches played in that month and ranking the players based upon those averages.
Here’s November.
1 | Emiliano Martínez (7.7)
Martínez started November with a shocker against Liverpool but has been in super nick since then despite one or two injury niggles. Decent with his feet, capable of extraordinary saves and improved from the early part of the season in terms of all-round reliability.
2 | Donyell Malen (7.6)
If you need someone to come up big when it counts, Malen was the man in November. He’s not a perfect tactical fix and his minutes have been limited as a result, but his impact has been fantastic.
3 | Morgan Rogers (7.5)
Rogers is back. He produced a month of ever-improving performances and seems to be the player who can take the ball on journeys no other player can. He has directly affected results, too, and there’s no better way to bounce back than that.
=4 | Matty Cash (7.3)
Villa’s right-back is in the form of career and it’s been too long now to be a blip. He’s defending well even against some of the best Premier League wingers, and even getting involved more effectively than ever in the attacking third.
=4 | John McGinn (7.3)
McGinn played in a couple of different positions in the month of November and treated Villa to one captain’s performance after another.
6 | Amadou Onana (7.2)
It’s to Onana’s enormous credit that Youri Tielemans returned from injury in November and there was a genuine conversation to be had about which player would end up making way for him.
7 | Boubacar Kamara (7.1)
It turned out that neither Onana nor Kamara really got bumped for Tielemans in the end and one of the reasons is that Kamara has maintained an excellent level of performance all season.
=8 | Youri Tielemans (6.9)
In a month interrupted by injury, the Belgium captain came up with some vital contributions as Villa’s winning run started to pick up real momentum. At his best, he’s one of the most dynamic players in the Premier League.
=8 | Ross Barkley (6.9)
Barkley had some excellent moments in important matches before his injury and even managed to get himself on the scoresheet in a Villa win.
=10 | Ezri Konsa (6.8)
Personally, I think this is a low average rating and therefore a low ranking for one of the best defenders in England. Konsa isn’t always forced into the kind of obvious defending that yields top marks but he’s been brilliant.
=10 | Lamare Bogarde (6.8)
Bogarde has been playing progressively less as a result of Villa’s injury problems easing but I think he’s had a terrific first half of the season and is going to be a massive bonus between now and May. Player.
=10 | Pau Torres (6.8)
Lots of Villa supporters swear by the Champions League qualification season but, for me, Torres is a far better defender now than he was then. Another fantastic month from a player about whom I have had my doubts.
=10 | Lucas Digne (6.8)
Left-back is becoming a selection conundrum for Unai Emery but that’s no reflection on Digne, who is defying expectations yet again to remain as first choice. He’s been a significant contributor.
14 | Emi Buendía (6.7)
With one or two minor exceptions in terms of direct involvement in games, Little Emi has been one of Villa’s most important players this season. His impact in November was crucial and December looks to be heading in the same direction.
15 | Victor Lindelöf (6.5)
Villa’s back-up on the right side of defence is getting more minutes than many of us expected and is proving, I think, to be a useful addition for exactly the kind of moments he’s being asked to handle.
16 | Ian Maatsen (6.4)
Some good games and some less good ones for Maatsen in November but he’s showing signs that the pattern of being better in the Europa League than the Premier League was in fact not a correlation worth a damn.
=17 | Ollie Watkins (6.0)
Villa’s centre-forward didn’t have the best of months but there were matches in which his overall input was a major positive factor for the team.
=17 | Jadon Sancho (6.0)
Sancho is becoming familiar to Villa supporters. He’ll come off the bench and get at opponents but struggle to have an effect on the outcome of matches. There are, I think, small improvements in evidence.
19 | Tyrone Mings (5.5)
Mings only featured in one match at the very start of November before getting injured.
20 | Evann Guessand (4.9)
I think Guessand has settled into a rhythm of performances that some people see as a 6 out of 10, others a 3 or 4. That’s obviously a concern but Emery has surprised us before.
