TSX- and JSE-listed Buffalo Coal has confirmed that one of its employees, working at the processing plant, in Dundee, in KwaZulu-Natal, has tested positive for Covid-19. The employee has been quarantined and referred to a medical practitioner after displaying flu-like symptoms.
The Colorado School of Mines is joining forces with Colorado State University and the University of Arizona to develop a centre of excellence dedicated to mine tailings research and education. Officials from the education institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the inter-university initiative, which will focus on the education of engineers to responsibly and sustainably manage mine tailings and the advancement of best practices in tailings management through applied science and engineering research.
The Covid-19 pandemic has allowed the mining industry to highlight and strengthen its role as a catalyst of social development in the areas in which it operates, Minsur CEO Juan Luis Krueger said on Monday. Krueger was speaking during an International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) online panel event on what the mining industry has learnt from Covid-19. Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani and Minerals Council of Australia CEO Tania Constable also participated in the conversation, which was led by Led by ICMM CEO Tom Butler.
TSX-V-listed Nevada Zinc has entered into a collaboration agreement with US granular micronutrients producer and distributor Cameron Chemicals. Granular micronutrients are used for the agricultural, turf, and horticultural industries with manufacturing facilities in the states of Virginia, Michigan and Washington. Zinc is considered an essential micronutrient in these sectors.
Aim- and AltX-listed Jubilee Metals delivered a sixth consecutive six-monthly period of double-digit growth with a 54% year-on-year increase in combined operational earnings for the first half of year at £12.8-million. Jubilee also achieved an 18% year-on-year increase in combined first half revenue to £29.4-million.

Russian mining company Nornickel has dismissed the management of the Talnakh concentrator for gross misconduct, after an internal investigation discovered two instances of unauthorised industrial water discharge. The world’s largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel said in a statement on Monday that industrial water was discharged from a recycled water sump, part of Talnakh Concentrator's tailings dam system, into adjacent area using flexible pipes and floating pumps. Prevailing weak export markets, combined with fixed price take-or-pay rail and port contracts, are combining to ensure losses for almost every tonne mined now. Higher quality producers can retain a competitive edge as buyers pick and choose their preferences right now. Australian exports are at their lowest levels in over 3 years, whilst SA exporters are also only loading minimally contracted tonnages.
The owners of the Northparkes gold/copper mine, in New South Wales, has inked a $550-milion streaming agreement with Triple Flag Mining Finance Bermuda, a subsidiary of Triple Flag Precious Metals Corp. Under the terms of the agreement, Triple Flag Bermuda would make an up-front cash payment of $550-million and ongoing payments equaling 10% of the spot gold price and spot silver price at the time of delivery, for 54% of the gold produced at Northparkes until a cap of 630 000 oz is delivered, and 27% thereafter.
Franco-Nevada will do at least $500-million in streaming and royalty deals in mining this year, and a lot more if base-metal producers proceed with several larger financing deals in the $500-million to $1-billion range. Workers at Antofagasta Minerals's Zaldivar copper mine in Chile have voted in favour of strike action after rejecting a pay offer, the mine's union said on Friday. The union said in a statement that 99% of its members had rejected a collective pay offer and a strike had been set for July 15, pending government mediation. Russian mining group Nornickel has suffered a fuel pipeline leak in the Arctic, a month-and-a-half after the company reported a major spill near the city of Norilsk. Nornickel said on Sunday that about 44.5 t of aviation fuel was spilled during the depressurisation of a pipeline belonging to Norilstransgaz, near the Tukhard settlement. The spill did not pose a threat to the people living in the area, Nornickel stressed in a statement, and added that Norilsktransgaz had initiated an internal investigation on the incident.
