Well-respected mining figure and consultant Roger Dixon has been honoured with the 2020 Brigadier Stokes award by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He received the award during an online annual general meeting of the institute on August 13.

Statistics South Africa has reported that mining production decreased by 28.2% year-on-year in June. The largest negative contributors were platinum-group metals, with output down 42.5% and contributing -10.6 percentage points; and iron-ore, with output down 54.2% and contributing -6.7 percentage points.

Russian aluminium giant Rusal said on Thursday its recurring net loss totalled $76-million in the first half of 2020 after a profit of $666-million a year ago as the novel coronavirus outbreak hit demand. Hong-Kong listed Rusal, the world's largest aluminium producer outside China, said that it expected global aluminium prices to continue to remain at depressed levels in 2020. Canada-based Star Diamond has made headway in its case to take joint venture (JV) partner Rio Tinto to court over its purported exercise of four options under an option and JV agreement relating to the Star-Orion South project, in Saskatchewan. This week, a Court of Queen’s Bench for Saskatchewan found that Star Diamond had successfully met its onus of establishing a serious issue to be tried in the legal proceedings. But Judge Grant Currie reportedly said that the junior could face an uphill battle in proving its case.

Base and precious metals miner Hudbay has identified an early gold opportunity from the New Britannia mill, in Manitoba, and says it could produce gold earlier than expected in 2021. The NYSE-listed company, which is midstride a mill refurbishment project at New Britannia mill, is still studying the opportunity and will provide more detail in the current quarter, reports president and CEO Peter Kukielski.

Diversified miner South32 on Thursday announced that the Samacor Manganese joint venture (JV), in which it holds a 60% stake, had inked a deal with Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance to divest of its shareholding in the Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (Temco). Temco produces ferromanganese from ore produced at the Groote Eylandt Mining Company, and exports it to customers in Asia and North America, as well as steel producers in Australia and New Zealand.
