Carbon capture and storage is one of the tools in the toolkit that needs to be included in the decarbonisation mix if the world is to reduce emissions  effectively over a reasonable time horizon. That is the view of Carbon Infrastructure Partners president and managing partner Craig Golinowski, who reports that broader recognition is being given to carbon capture’s role in carbon emissions management. With the modern-day consumer demanding greater accountability and sustainability, the Kimberley Process (KP) must not be left behind, says World Diamond Council (WDC) president Edward Asscher. Technology group Wärtsilä and energy management and automation company Schneider Electric have developed an end-to-end power system reference design, aimed specifically at lithium mine operations where there is no access to a grid supply of electricity. The solution contributes to sustainable lithium production by enhancing the efficient delivery and use of energy, and by leveraging microgrids and enabling renewable energy sources.

TSX-V-listed Tsodilo Resources has been granted a renewal of its prospecting licence, in Botswana, for an area which contains the company’s BK16 kimberlite project. The licence renewal was granted by the country’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, and is valid for a two-year period from October 1, this year.

Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin has decided not to take part in a buyback of Nornickel shares, his Interros Holding said on Friday, increasing the proceeds of aluminium producer Rusal from the deal. Potanin owns a 34.6% stake in Nornickel, which plans to buy up to 3.4% of its shares for $2-billion, in partial compensation for a smaller than expected 2020 dividend. China's Ganfeng Lithium , one of the world's top producers of the commodity used in electric-vehicle batteries, on Friday said it would invest in a solar-powered lithium plant in northern Argentina. Ganfeng will use a 120-MW photovoltaic system to generate electricity for a lithium extraction plant in Salta province's Salar de Llullaillaco, where it is already developing the Mariana lithium brine project. "Clean energy for clean lithium!" it wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Base metals explorer Variscan Mines has received firm commitments to raise A$4.25-million in a share placement to institutional and sophisticated investors. The ASX-listed company on Monday said that it would place some 53.1-million shares, at a price of 80c a share, under its existing placement capacity.

Chinese regulators shut more coal mines amid rising concern over industrial accidents as prices continue to rise for the fuel that provides half the country’s energy. Hubei has halted all coal mining operations from June 15 to July 5 after a gas pipeline explosion in the province killed 25 people on June 13, according to a statement from the local government on Saturday. It follows Anyuan Coal Industry Group on Friday halting five mines in Jiangxi province from June 21 to July 4.

TSX-V-listed junior New Oroperu Resources has announced a business combination with capital pool company First Light Capital to create Anacortes Mining – a new gold company to be led by former Equinox COO Jim Curry. Anacortes will focus on exploration and advancement of New Oroperu’s Tres Cruces project, in Peru, in addition to seeking further growth opportunities in the Americas. An updated feasibility study (PFS) into the Honeymoon uranium project, in South Australia, has resulted in a 22.5% increase in production capacity, compared with last year’s prefeasibility study. ASX-listed Boss Energy on Monday reported that the update d PFS incorporated planned changes to the Honeymoon processing plant in an effort to lower costs and increase financial returns.

The price surge has subsided for now, although Asia Pacific physical cargoes continue to experience strong demand. Australian coal is likely to remain the price leader as deliveries to the port of Gladstone are being restricted after a train derailment last week. For its part, South African coal also continues to experience difficulty in accessing Transnet Fright Rail capacity. European power and gas prices are stronger with carbon emissions also looking robust once more.

Precious metals miner Hochschild said that 27 workers were killed and 13 injured a road accident on Friday morning. A bus operated by a contractor was carrying workers from the Pallancata operation to the city of Arequipa in southern Peru when the accident happened.

Underground operations at the Lalor mine, in Snow Lake, Manitoba, have been halted for an investigation in the death of a worker on Saturday evening. Metals miner Hudbay Minerals reported on Sunday that a worker, employed by a service provider, was fatally injured from a while working at height. No other personnel were injured.

Mining companies operating in Chile will seek to enter the constitutional debate set to start soon in the world's top copper-producing nation as the firms try to preserve growth of the sector, an industry leader told local media on Saturday. A broad political agreement generated after the violent social protests that shook Chile in 2019 resulted in an assembly of 155 members that will have to draft a new constitution for the country. The Australian resources sector has called on federal Parliament to support pragmatic, targeted and reasonable amendments to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act which the government will bring forward for debate this week. The Australian government has introduced two bills to lay the foundations of reforms to the EPBC Act and deliver single touch environmental approvals and the development of national environmental standards.
