Stabilised security situation in Ethiopia allows for Tulu Kapi to progress towards development

Aim-listed Kefi Gold and Copper has said that the security situation in Ethiopia has materially improved since the end of last year, following the end of the civil war in the country's northern regions during December, the lifting of the national state of emergency in February, and the agreed ceasefire in March. Kefi has a vested interest in Ethiopia, where the Tulu Kapi gold project is being progressed towards development, following the granting of a mining licence in April 2015.

Goldman cools on copper as Europe’s energy woes threaten demand

There’s worse to come for copper after a sharp slump, according to Goldman Sachs Group, which slashed its forecasts for the metal and said risks to economic growth from the global energy crunch were skewed heavily upwards. Goldman’s analysts have been among the more bullish voices on commodities -- and particularly on copper -- over the past two years. But the bank said the metal was now 40% below its expectations, and that recession risks in developed economies would fuel demand pessimism for the rest of 2022.

Jubilee commissions cobalt refining circuit in Zambia

Dual-listed Jubilee Metals Group expects its Sable copper and cobalt refinery, in Zambia, to start commercial production in August. The cobalt refining circuit entered the commissioning phase in June, as expected.

Tombola gains ground in Cloncurry

Gold hopeful Tombola Gold has struck a A$7.3-million agreement to acquire the Lorena mine and processing facility, in Queensland. The Lorena gold project is located some 30km from Tombola’s flagship Mt Freda gold mine, and includes an integrated carbon-in-leach processing facility with a capacity of between 250 000 t/y to 300 000 t/y, a permitted tailing storage facility, permitted mining and exploration leases and an existing opencut gold and copper mine.

CSIRO joins forces with TMC to develop underwater monitoring plan

Battery metals explorer The Metals Company (TMC), through its Australian subsidiary, The Metals Company Australia, has joined forces with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to potentially develop an ecosystem-based management and monitoring plan (EMMP) for its proposed deep-sea polymetallic nodule collection operations in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) of the Pacific Ocean. Key process plant contracts in place for Horizonte’s Araguaia nickel project

Nickel developer Horizonte Minerals has awarded all major and long-lead-time process plant equipment contracts for its flagship Araguaia project, in Brazil. Following completion of the competitive tender processes, and detailed negotiations, the dual-listed company has now secured equipment supply and technical support services for the balance of the Araguaia process flow sheet from leading global suppliers. This is in line with the strategy employed for the award of the furnace contract to Hatch earlier this year.

Tartisan releases PEA for nickel project in Kenora district

The preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for the Kenbridge nickel project, in the Kenora district of Ontario, provides compelling evidence to progress towards feasibility and to move the project into production, said CSE-listed Tartisan Nickel. The PEA is based on a nine-year, 1 500-t/d underground mining and processing operation, using an existing shaft.

Energy crisis is hastening end of fossil fuel era, says India

The global energy crisis is accelerating a shift to renewable sources and hastening the end of the dominance of fossil fuels, according to India’s Power and Renewable Energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh. Renewables paired with energy storage are now cheaper than coal after the fuel’s price surged in recent months, while fossil sources are also experiencing a lack of investment in new production, Singh said Wednesday in a speech at the Sydney Energy Forum.

Cracow misses the target

The Cracow gold mine, in Queensland, has again failed to meet production targets, owner Aeris Resources said on Wednesday. For the 2022 financial year, Aeris had set a production target of between 56 000 oz and 59 000 oz, at an all-in sustaining cost of between A$1 775/oz and A$1 825/oz for the operation.

Alicanto reports maiden resource in Sweden

Junior Alicanto Minerals has reported a maiden inferred resource of 311 000 t of contained zinc, 15-million ounces of silver and 44 000 t of lead at its Sala project, in Sweden. The ASX-listed explorer announced an independent inferred mineral resource estimate of 9.7-million tonnes, at 4.5% zinc equivalent for Sala, which included a high-grade core from surface of 4.5-million tonnes at 6% zinc equivalent.
