Coast Guard member found deceased inside Valdez residence, Saturday
KODIAK, Alaska — A Coast Guard member assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur was found deceased inside his home in Valdez, Alaska, on Saturday.
Deceased is Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Frankie Lopez, a 23-year-old male from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Lopez was discovered by Valdez police officers late Saturday evening, who pronounced the individual deceased.
The deceased was then transported to Valdez and will be sent to a medical examiner’s office in Anchorage.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our shipmate,” said Lt. Timothy Cassel, commanding officer, Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur. “Our hearts go out to Frankie’s family, loved ones and friends during this difficult time. We are working to provide the proper counseling and support to our shipmates and family members of the deceased.”
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

30 August: Seaman Ethan Tucker, 19 charged with murder of fellow coastguardsman 19 year-old Seaman Ethan Kelch after a seven month investigation.
Tucker has been charged with multiple serious violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The alleged offenses include two counts of muder, one count of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of maiming, one count of obstruction and one count of failure to obey an order. If he is found guilty, Tucker faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, maritime executive reported .
Authorities arrested the Bay Area-based Coast Guard member and shipped him south to San Diego, where he’ll await court-martial proceedings for allegedly killing a fellow seaman in Alaska, navytimes reported.
Coast Guard: JUNEAU, Alaska – A Coast Guard member assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Douglas Munro (WHEC-724) was found unresponsive and later declared deceased Sunday morning in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Deceased is Seaman Ethan Kelch, 19-year-old male, from Virginia.
The cutter is in Dutch Harbor awaiting repairs. Kelch was reported missing during normal liberty hours Saturday night.
Crewmembers were deployed to conduct a ground search. An Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew attached to the Douglas Munro was launched to search by air. Unalaska Fire and Police department personnel assisted in the ground search.
Search parties found Kelch unresponsive on the west side of Amaknak Island. Local emergency medical services personnel performed CPR and transported him to Iliuliuk Clinic. He was pronounced deceased at the clinic early Sunday morning.
“The Coast Guard is deeply saddened by the tragic news that we lost one of our own,” said Rear Adm. Matthew T. Bell Jr., Coast Guard 17th District commander. “As we mourn his death, we send our deepest condolences to Seaman Kelch’s family and loved ones.”
An investigation is currently underway, and the Coast Guard is working with local authorities to determine the cause of death.

April 2, Spc. Nicholas Peter DiMona III, 20, was killed during a live fire training accident, 4th Brigade Combat team (Airborne) reported in a press release . He died from a gun shot wound despite receiving medical attention.
He was taken by helicopter to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, local anchorage news reported.
DiMona was an infantryman assigned to the Army’s 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. He joined the Army in 2017 and had been stationed in Alaska since April 2018.
