What began as a small group of veterans and friends wanting to play rifleman at the Whittington Center in New Mexico during the Board of Trustees meetings in early Spring and over Labor Day, has morphed into a twice a year tradition with up to two dozen guys attending. Most become regulars and look forward to their time on the range and telling stories of their war days as all are veterans. Without a doubt, the stories get better each year .
What started as a 2-3 day event has turned into a 10 day affair with different guys coming in and out.
Then there is the handful of long term regulars as you see in the photo who are in it for the long term.

Kraus and Brown worked out his .308 Ruger Precision Rifle with Black Hills .308 Win Match 175 grain Boat-Tail Hollow Point ammo. Brown chose the Ruger Precision in .308 over 6.5 Creedmore on the advice of Black Hill’s CEO Jeff Hoffman who said the Creedmore is more expensive and less available than the .308. Brown uses Black Hills seconds as it saves money and the only difference between regular ammo is that seconds are so classified only because of cosmetic imperfections.
Brown and Kraus sent many boxes of ammo down range over the Labor Day week end at the NRA’s premier shooting facility, the Whittington Center, Raton, New Mexico.
Brown said, “If you are a serious or even only sometime shooter and are traveling through the Southwest, you owe it to yourself to put rounds down range at this world-class facility.
Brown is using a Uncle Bob’s Bulls Bag as a rifle rest. His Ruger is topped off by a Lucid Optics L5 6-24×50 scope which is a great buy for the money.
