Sergeant First Class Jeremy W. Griffin, U.S. Green Beret Killed in Afghanistan

The Army identified Sergeant First Class Jeremy W. Griffin, as the Green Beret killed in Afghanistan 16 September.

DOD official statement

“The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy W. Griffin, 40, from Greenbrier, Tennessee, was killed in action Sept. 16, 2019, by small arms fire when his unit was engaged in combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation.

Griffin was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.”

“The loss of Sgt. 1st Class Griffin is felt across the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) Family and the entire Special Forces community,” Col. Owen G. Ray, commander, 1st Special Forces Group said.

U.S. Service Member Killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – A U.S. service member was killed in action today in Afghanistan, NATO reported.

16 U.S. Service Members have been killed in combat in Afghanistan this year, with 10 of those having been killed in action since June of this year, an accelerating rate of KIAs.

A defense official told Army Times that the fallen soldier was a Green Beret, but did not specify the operator’s unit. A separate defense official said that a green-on-blue incident is not suspected..

In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service member is being withheld until 24 hours after family notification is complete according to the release.
