Officer Joseph Seals, three civilians and two suspects killed in Jersey City Shootout

A Police Officer, two suspects and three civilians were killed in a shootout in Jersey City today. . Their bodies were found in a kosher grocery store at Bayview Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said police believe the three civilians killed in the grocery store were shot by the suspects, Local cbs news reported.

We’re devastated by today’s mass shooting in Jersey City. 

To the men and women of the Jersey City Police, New Jersey State Police, police from other Hudson County communities and bordering communities, NJ TRANSIT police, Port Authority police, NYPD, and our federal partners at the FBI and ATF – we’re deeply grateful for your service.

We mourn the loss of Officer Joseph Seals, a longtime and heralded member of the Jersey City Police Department, who gave his life in the line of duty and in the name of service to his community. Our condolences are with his wife and children.

We acknowledge the many students and educators who sheltered in fear through this afternoon, and the parents who worried about the safety of their children.

This is still an active investigation. We will leave it to law enforcement do their jobs and fill in the answers.

New Jersey has very strict gun laws.

In September Gov. Phil Murphy said the state may end business relationships with retailers and makers of guns if they don’t adopt measures to curb illegal firearm sales, WSJ reported.

The Democratic governor signed an executive order directing state officials to ask all gun makers or retailers that currently sell weapons to New Jersey to disclose how they screen for straw purchasers or firearms traffickers and prevent sales to people barred from owning guns. WSJ reported.
